Retailers and manufacturers should collaborate at shelf, claims JDA
Retailers need to collaborate with manufacturers to anticipate demand for products featured in consumer magazines and on social networks, argues Wayne Usie, senior vice president of retail, JDA Software.Retailers are entering uncharted territory with consumers ? the economy is showing signs of growth while at the same time consumers are demonstrating a reluctance to return to their pre-recession buying habits. Compounding this is the fact consumers are more frequently turning to their mobile devices in stores for quick access to product and pricing information that will help with their buying decisions. That’s why it is imperative for retailers to transform their collaborative relationships with manufacturers, and a great place to start is at the shelf.

The global recession and the rapid growth of China and emerging economies have created a ‘New Normal.’
This new environment has leveled the playing field and created new opportunities for automakers to differentiate themselves through improved supply chain management. Automakers are faced with a unique opportunity to improve revenue while reducing costs and improving asset throughput.
To take advantage of this ‘New Normal’ environment, JDA Software Group, “The Supply Chain Company,” recommends focusing on strategies in the following areas.

IBM: Does the DemandTec Deal Indicate Big Blue's Larger Entry to Apps Arena?
International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM) said on Thursday that it had agreed to acquire software company DemandTec, Inc. (NASDAQ:DMAN) for about $440 million or $13.20 a share.
In the past, IBM purposely stayed away from the applications software sector to avoid potential channel conflict with independent software vendors, such as Lawson Software and JDA Software Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:JDAS), who build their applications on top of IBM's infrastructure software stack.
Given IBM's newfound willingness to move into the applications arena, the analyst said the deal could be positive for the conventional application vendors, particularly JDA Software (NASDAQ:JDAS), Manhattan Associates, Inc. (NASDAQ:MANH), Aspen Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: AZPN) and Saba Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:SABA).

Matching Demand Forecast Periods to Production Lead Times
It is common to speak of a “one number” demand forecast. And a “one number” forecast works fine if your demand forecast and your manufacturing planning are based on the same time period. For example, if you do a monthly forecast and the plant uses it to plan production for the entire month, then there is no inconsistency. But a lot can happen in a month.
I was briefed a while back by Nitin Goyal, product manager for JDA Software’s Sales & Operational Planning (S&OP) solution. I asked him how his customers with long manufacturing lead times were dealing with this issue.

Making the Sale When the Path to Purchase Leads to Your Door
As consumers continue to trim spending and shift their shopping to the Internet, two significant retail store trends have emerged. Bigbox retailers are moving to smaller formats to reduce under-utilized space and stay profitable. While the testing may lead to an in-store purchase, shoppers increasingly are purchasing items online at lower prices, or turning to their mobile devices to seek a better price elsewhere.

Bob Anson of JDA Software recently spoke with Manufacturing Business Technology about how these two companies must now ramp up production like never before to fulfill these orders. Air transit is by far the fastest and most direct form of delivery, allowing businesses to make last-minute logistics decisions and fulfil urgent orders. As such, it is estimated that such eleventh-hour shipments account for roughly 50% of the freight shipped by air. On the other hand, it can be perceived as the most expensive and this stops many companies from using air freight, relying instead on trucks or container ships which are a slower but, at first glance, a far cheaper option.

Bill Kotrba, vice-president of industry strategy for leisure, travel and hospitality, JDA SoftwareIn pricing and revenue management, travel companies hedging their bets with a tried-and-tested process may actually be riskier than taking a chance on something different. Successful Space
Before tapping tech to allocate your space, you must know how much space you really have.Retail merchandise improvement continues to be an important lever for retailers as they work to improve consumer relevancy. Indeed, many tier-one retailers are using space optimization to increase localization throughout their stores, and improved allocation of microspace (the determination of individual SKU location and facings within a fixture), and macrospace (the determination of category and department locations within a store) within brick-and-mortar retail can result in 1 percent to 3 percent improved revenue and 2 percent to 4 percent improved volume.

What Does the Supply Chain Assessment Database Tell Us?
As you may have seen, our "Cool New Product of the Month" for January was a new supply chain self-assessment tool from JDA Software. I liked it for several reason, especially the automated way that gave respondents some very good insights for relatively little effort. The on-line tool in part took the intelligence of the traditional strategic value assessment process used by i2 Technologies (which JDA acquired last year) and automated it. You obviously can't get the full type of insight you can with an on-site assessment, but this is not at all a bad place to start.

100 Great Supply Chain Projects
The "New Normal" economy of the post-Great Recession era has forced companies to operate leaner and meaner than in the past. Global outsourcing, reducing the number of suppliers you do business with, and using optimized planning to reduce inventory are common techniques companies use to accomplish a cost-effective supply chain.
